Opera as an onboard event in Kristiansund

Kristiansund is often referred to as the “opera town”, and for a good reason: the town is housing Norway’s oldest opera (established in 1928) as well as an annual Opera festival.

Today’s opera house “Festiviteten” is a gem in itself, completed in 1914 in a combination of Art Nouveau and neoclassicism, built of stones from a nearby recreation area and beautifully decorated. A new opera and cultural house is however in planning and aims to be finished in 2025. 

The Opera Fest Weeks in February/March every year comprises around 50 performances and concerts. In a unique way, it’s combining high-level amateurs with national and international professional opera soloists.

A cruise ship call during the Opera Fest weeks is ideal for a themed cruise. Outside this period, an event can be tailored according to your wishes, whether it is opera, operetta, ballet or classical music – or a combination!

Earlier this year, "World Navigator", operated by Atlas Ocean Voyages (subsidiary of Mystic Cruises), arranged an onboard event for their guests during their call to Kristiansund. 

The opera singers Stephanie Lippert and Hallvar Djupvik, together with musician Oddgeir Nossen, performed from the locally composed opera "Donna Bacalao", a story about the workers in the clipfish industry, which came to be of such great importance in the development of Kristiansund from the 18th century and to the post-was period.
